Story
The lands of Eldar have long been known as the origin of chaos, a place where monsters and demons wreak havoc, indiscriminate in their madness. Legend tells of how the Spirit King, whose coming was heralded in by a meteor shower, gained control of the creatures and waged an unrelenting war upon civilization. Order and life were brought to the brink of destruction, but an alliance of the four races was able to drive them back and seal the evil. Centuries more have passed and once again the lands are slowly being overrun by the reemerging monsters. Without a known cause or even a united front to repel them, it would seem that this time, Eldar will fall. It is up to the main character to take up the forgotten mantle of the hero, reunite the races, confront the hordes of monsters and restore peace to the land.

Gameplay
An action role-playing game (RPG) like the first two PSP releases in the Valhalla Knights series, Valhalla Knights: Eldar Saga challenges players with the task of uniting the divided peoples of the land of Eldar against a rising evil and battling the creatures at its vanguard. Fighting your way through a series of story driving quests and optional side adventures, players have the freedom of choice needed to build their party, as well as their choice of a variety of character classes, including fighter, mage, priest, thief, and bard as they customize their own character. The game can be played in single player mode locally, where the player teams up with AI characters, or a two-player co-op mode online that lets you battle your way across Eldar with friends from all over the world. Action within the game's storyline is split between two player controlled characters set within different time periods, as the player's initial character eventually marries, has children and passes the quest to save Eldar on to his/her progeny. Combat in quests occurs in real-time, meaning that enemies are always viewable. This makes for both more exciting action, and if the player chooses, the ability to keep out of an enemy's path and thus bypass conflict or at the least put it off until a more opportune time.

Key Game Features

  • Multi-generational Storyline - The player starts off as a human that seeks to reconcile and rebuild old alliances with the dwarves, halflings, and elves. As the story progresses, the player can choose a character of any of the races, each with specific strengths and weaknesses that can be customized further.
  • Fully Customizable Characters - With five basic job classes (fighter, mage, priest, thief and bard) and numerous advanced classes, each with their own specific skills and abilities, and weapons and equipment that change the appearance of the player’s character, the customization options are almost limitless.
  • Real-time Battles on the Field Map - Battles take place in real-time, and all enemies are visible on the field map with no random encounters. These foes may be fought or avoided as the player sees fit.
  • Build Your Own Battle Party - Specify the race and job class of your accompanying party members as you hire mercenaries at the local tavern.
  • Online Co-op Multiplayer - Party up with a second player online to explore the land of Eldar together.
  • Wii Exclusive - Valhalla Knights: Eldar Saga is not only the first Valhalla Knights title for a console, but is a Wii exclusive.
The lands of Eldar have long been known as the origin of chaos, a place where monsters and demons wreak havoc, indiscriminate in their madness. Divinity II: Ego Draconis

Divinity II: Ego Draconis Review

Divinity II: Ego Draconis Feature

  • The ability to build your own ultimate fighting creature from body parts collected in battle. This creature's power is literally the sum of its body parts, and once created it will follow your commands Golem fashion.
  • Sequel to an award-winning Divinity RPG series, that makes use of the same classless system that was incorporated in earlier games, which allows you to choose your own path as you become a Dragon Knight.
  • For the first time, an RPG unlocks the power of the Dragon. Climb high and vaporize all that stands in your way as you strategically use both your human and dragon forms to defeat Damian and become the ultimate Dragon Knight.
  • Divinity II provides a wide range of moral choices while questing. When you make these choices, the consequences of your actions appear throughout game play, and keep the action exciting and intertwined.
  • Use of powerful Battle Towers, vast citadels accessible via the relic known as the Dragon Stone. The Dragon Stone allows you to teleport to the Battle Tower at any moment so that you can utilize the powers within.
Divinity II: Ego Draconis is a single player role-playing game (RPG) and third game in the Divinity series. Divinity II features a classless character system, designed to allow ultimate flexibility to any created character with the right level and distribution of experience points. Also featured are a choice-based storyline, the ability to fight in human and dragon form, control of composite creatures formed from parts of defeated enemies and powerful strongholds called Battle Towers that can be transported to in time of need.

Story
Divinity II: Ego Draconis brings you back to Rivellon, a timeless world of awe and magic, torn and scarred by successions of apocalyptic wars. Ever since the Great War ended, the Order of the Dragon Slayers has had eyes only for their number one enemy: the Dragon Knights who killed their Divine hero. But all the while the true enemy, the Black Ring, still festers beneath the surface poised to strike, for their leader Damian tirelessly plots silent schemes with utterly malign intent. Then one day, an event takes place that will reshape the history of Rivellon: a dying Dragon Knight gives her powers to a member of the order that seeks to destroy her: you. Perhaps you, blessed as you are with the powers of the Dragon, will be able to stop the black tides that threaten to engulf Rivellon. Many adventures await you, many mysteries yearn to be unraveled and all the world awaits the outcome of your new destiny.

Gameplay
Divinity II: Ego Draconis like its predecessors, Divine Divinity and Beyond Divinity, is a single player RPG utilizing the standard system of experience point accumulation to level up characters to meet the growing challenges faced. Except in cases where the storyline requires specific series of events and environments, the game features a seamless gameworld, that for the most part players are free to explore. This along with a moral component to decision making, 20 possible quest solutions and varied non-player character (NPC) reactions makes for gameplay pleasing to any RPG fan.

In addition, like Beyond Divinity, Divinity II features a classless character system, where it is possible for any created character, with the right distribution of experience points, to attain the items and/or abilities needed to triumph in virtually any situation faced. This is by design to add flexibility to gameplay. Players of Divinity II also experience flexibility in the game's mix of aerial and ground-based combat. This is rooted in shape-shifting ability that allows players, once the dragon ability is unlocked, and playing in areas physically permissible to the dragon form, to switch between human and dragon forms at will. Beyond the obvious increase in power, playing as a dragon also allows for special skills and abilities not available to humans, as well as allows you to travel faster and longer distances than possible in your human form. Be warned though, you are also much more visible to enemies. Another pivotal element of gameplay is the Battle Tower. Battle Towers are central structures to which you can teleport at all times — once a tower is yours, that is — using a mystical device called the Dragon Stone. More than that, your tower houses multiple rooms and terraces where different attendants provide a variety of services.

Key Game Features

  • Sequel to an Award-Winning RPG Series - Following the lineage of Divine Divinity and Beyond Divinity, Divinity II: Ego Draconis has adapted many of the most famous elements that made these two original games classics. Divinity II: Ego Draconis makes use of the same classless system that was incorporated in Divine Divinity, which allows you to choose your own path as you become a Dragon Knight.
  • Fight as Both a Human and a Dragon - Don't settle for taming and riding a dragon when you can be the Dragon. For the first time, an RPG unleashes the very power of the Dragon on you. Climb high and vaporize all that stands in your way as you strategically use both your human and dragon forms to defeat Damian and become the ultimate Dragon Knight.
  • Dynamic Choice-Based Storyline - Divinity II : Ego Draconis gives you a wide range of moral choices when deciding on how to act on quest objectives. When you make these choices, the consequences of your actions appear throughout game play. Consequences such as up to 20 possible quest solutions, new quest chains, NPC reactions, vendor pricing and other experience-altering consequences make Divinity II: Ego Draconis very interesting and engaging.
  • Powerful Battle Tower Gameplay Element - Looming like a colossal stone claw over Sentinel Island, stands the Battle Tower, a vast citadel built many centuries ago by Maxos, the Dragon Mage. Become bound to the Battle Tower through a mystical relic known as the Dragon Stone. The Dragon Stone allows you to teleport to the Battle Tower at any moment so that you can utilize the powers within.
  • Build Your Own Ultimate Fighting Creature - Conjure the spirits to bring to life a creature made from body parts you have collected during your battles. This creature's power is literally the sum of its body parts; the composition of various limbs determines its strengths and abilities. Once you are able to assemble this abomination, you may summon it to support you in combat.

Diablo 2 (Mac)

Diablo 2 (Mac) Review

Everything that made the original Diablo great--nonstop action, wicked monsters, dark Gothic atmosphere, and fantastic magic items--has returned. But new enhancements such as the class skill system and cheater-proof multiplayer competition make Diablo 2 even better than the original.

The millions of gamers who fought their way through the horror of Tristram's catacombs in the original Diablo realized that all was not well after their hero destroyed the demon's physical body. Diablo 2 opens with a vivid animated vision of that mad, doomed hero, who unwittingly spreads chaos as he moves toward a fate of Diablo's choosing. With the original character classes gone, players choose from a new cadre of champions: the Barbarian (can wield two two-handed swords at once, one in each hand), the Necromancer (raises the dead to fight his battles), the Amazon (master of bow and spear), Paladin (holy crusader), and Sorceress (wielder of elemental magic). These warriors follow a diabolical plot through four acts, and each act is roughly as big as the original Diablo.

Diablo 2 looks and behaves very much like Diablo. Players are assigned quests by nonplayer characters and adventure through dark catacombs and crypts. Hordes of vile monsters assail the hero, who survives by force of arms, powerful spells, and through the use of varied and exotic magic items. Randomly generated dungeons guarantee fresh adventure each time a new game is started. But unlike the original game, characters must fight their way through the above-ground wilderness before entering a dungeon. Fortunately, some of the frustrations of adventuring have been lessened in Diablo 2, thanks to the new ability to run and the clever implementation of "waypoints" that let your character quickly travel to and from the safety of town.

Along with the new character classes comes a new character skill system. As in the original game, players improve their character's ability scores as they kill monsters and gain experience. But unlike the original game, players get to add specific skills, spells, and powers each time they advance. For example, after gaining a level you could choose between taking a skill that improves your attack speed or a skill that allows you to scatter your foes with a mighty shout. With this customized advancement system it is unlikely that two high-level characters, even characters of the same class, will be alike. Instead of progressing along a set path, you can choose skills and powers that complement your own particular playing style. Interestingly, this new customizable class system closely parallels the changes made in the new edition of Dungeons & Dragons.

Other enhancements include a method for creating and customizing magic items, 3-D accelerated spell effects, anticheat multiplayer code, and a place to safely store excess money and equipment. But even without these tweaks, even without the sophisticated story line and all the cool new features, Diablo 2 is just a great game. The sound, music, and graphics combine to create a tantalizingly eerie setting. Players will willingly let their game-playing hours slip well past reasonable bedtimes, suffering bleary-eyed classes and meetings in exchange for "just one more" magic item, dungeon level, or character skill.

Diablo is back. Say hello to the game that will once again dominate gamers' computers, and say good-bye to your free time. --Michael Fehlauer.

Pros:

  • Diabolical, engrossing story line told through brilliant cutscenes
  • All five of the new classes are distinct and fun
  • Fantastic music and sound effects
  • Random dungeons allow unlimited replayability
  • Millions of magic items, including rare items and sets of unique magical equipment
Cons:
  • Addictive gameplay may cause loss of sleep, significant other, job
  • Virtually no improvement in graphics

Diablo Hellfire Bundle

Diablo Hellfire Bundle Review

Diabo's smite-the-evil action made the game a hit, but its random story generator, which greatly changes the layout, foes, and quests each time a player restarts, made it a game numerous game developers want to copy. The story is straightforward: an evil demon named Diablo has wiped out your entire village and has taken up residence under a cathedral on the outskirts of town. Most everyone is afraid of going near that place, but not you. Start as the frail sorcerer, the marksman rogue, or the tough-as-nails warrior and devise a battle strategy that suits your character's skills and weaknesses. Descend deeper into the catacombs to stamp out evil, buffer your experience, and pick up stronger weapons and spells--you're going to need them.

As if that weren't already enough to keep you playing for quite some time, this package includes the Hellfire authorized expansion pack, which provides even better weapons, more magical items, deeper levels, and a new character class: fearless monk. If you're the type who doesn't like to walk alone through the valley of the shadow of death, log on to Battle.net, where you can find up to three other players to join your party for free.

StarCraft Battle Chest

StarCraft Battle Chest Review

StarCraft Battle Chest Feature

  • This includes the hit StarCraft, the incredible StarCraft - Brood War, and two official strategy guides, for hours & hours of space-based action and combat
  • Play through 56 mission in 6 unique campaigns, to decide the fate of the galaxy
  • Over 175 player maps over a wide variety of battlefields
  • Play multiplayer battles over battle.net
  • Battle for control of the galaxy with the StarCraft Battle Chest!
The full versions of StarCraft and the acclaimed expansion pack Brood War, as well as complete strategy guides for each, make StarCraft: Battle Chest a treasure chest for real-time strategy fans.

Instead of two similarly powered enemies facing off, the three distinct races in StarCraft have unique capabilities and strategies. Everyone still competes in the RTS genre's typical race for resources, but that's the only shared trait. Terrans can move their bulky mechanized bases as necessary, while the reptilian Zerg grow their colonies and warriors from mutating larvae. Meanwhile, the noble Protoss warp in equipment from their home world using psionic powers.

Not only does game maker Blizzard juggle the races' playability and match it with superb art and sound effects, it also weaves together an engrossing three-act plot. Early on, as a Terran magistrate, you spend a breathtaking 30 minutes defending against a Zerg onslaught. As the story unfolds around you, you'll experience the Zerg's hive mentality and decipher the mysterious Protoss by the game's dramatic conclusion.

Missions vary in scope and are effectively framed with dialogue, chapter screens, and in-mission exposition. Multiplayer games are also very well represented by Blizzard's own free Battle.net service. If you'd rather play over a local area network, StarCraft will generously "spawn" up to seven copies so your friends can join in.

In keeping with StarCraft's groundbreaking design, Brood War presents you with three sides of a galactic conflict. Scheming humans, insidious Zerg, and proud Protoss collide again, with stunning new cinematics setting the stage. Old friends and foes and ominous new arrivals give the story a breakneck pace, while a handful of additions to each race's arsenal makes for tense battles. Brood War also features stellar new environments and ambient art, as well as more than 100 additional multiplayer maps.

Some missions require a bit of finesse, breaking the resource-gathering routine while making good use of the new units. Humans now have Valkyrie missile frigates as well as medics who automatically try to heal your grunts. New for the Zerg air force is the acid-spewing Devourer; the new Lurker unit provides heavy-duty (under)ground support. Along with the Corsair fighter, the Protoss reenter the fray with Dark Templar, which can merge to form the devastating Dark Archon. Unfortunately, units old and new still suffer from weak artificial intelligence in path finding.

Real-time strategy games don't get any more epic or any more satisfying. --Jack Gardiner Real-time strategy goes to new levels as three intergalactic species fight for survival. Control the vagabond Terrans, enigmatic Protoss, or the bloodthirsty Zerg as they wage war on the edge of the galaxy. Includes support for Internet play over Battle.net, Blizzard's on-line gaming service.
